Biased Broadcasting Corporation

|
I am now totally satisfied that the BBC which was once totally independent of government is now nothing more than the governments official mouth piece.

Some of you may have noticed that the government wants to have a smart meter or two in every home and business in the land by 2020. Ostensibly this is to make us all 'use less energy' but as ever the governments real intentions are hidden behind 'good intentions'.
The smart meter itself will 'talk to a database' held on a computer somewhere over a mobile phone link. Ignoring for a second the amount of extra phone traffic these meters will generate what really isn't clear is who will hold the database(s).

To be able to bill people presumably the database(s) will be very similar to the ones currently held by energy companies. After all if we want to switch suppliers we simply confirm the switch with the new supplier who actions the behind the scenes changes by conversing on some level with our old suppliers.
What isn't clear though is who is actually holding these databases. It could be the energy companies, it could be an energy company sub contractor, it could be a government department.
In light of this is it right to allow this company or these companies to have direct access to your energy supply usage?

Still the BBC are fully onboard even though the cost of installing these meters runs to 8 billion pounds and will potentially save an 'average' customer just £28 a year. So if the power government 'could do sums' they would realise that on financial grounds the idea is a non-starter. The government has said that the power companies will foot the bill but where do the power companies get their cash from...?

Their customers of course. What the government fails to realise is that every energy company customer is also a taxpayer so when they say the taxpayer will not be funding these meters they are obviously lying.

So no matter how it's cut we the energy customers will be footing the bill for the governments desire to have these devices in every home and business.

The BBC follows the party line that people WILL adjust their energy consumption and help 'save the planet' once they can see how much they can save!
The clowns then even go on to say that 'some people' in the trials changed the way they used energy but what they don't say is that most people DIDN'T.

I don't know about you but my current meters are all but inaccessible. The gas one is in the back of a cupboard and the electricity one is 8 feet off the ground and has a LCD display that cannot be seen without a ladder. Guess what sorts of displays the smart meters will have!

There is also the little publicised fact that within each smart meter is a device that can shut off individual meters by mobile phone. This is truly shocking.
If you get too far behind on your payments the energy company can shut off YOUR energy in an instant. But as we have no idea who controls these databases and has access to the meters it gets even more sinister.

Let's say you burn more gas or electric than 'average' and refuse to change your ways. The government will have the ability to implement 'selective power cuts' throughout the day and night to one house, ten houses, businesses, churchs in fact any organisation or person who falls foul of the 'recommended electricity and gas usage allowance'.
Irrespective of your ability to actually pay YOUR bill some government sponsored 'expert' will be able to decide that YOU are using too much energy and throttle your supply and you can do sod all about it.

Anyway coming back to the BBC I added a comment to this page about the fact that I thought giving the energy company or the government the power to shut off individual homes was a breach of civil liberties and lo and behold it was never published.
The ones that were published all lauded the fact that these meters would help prevent man made global warming!

Here is some truth about the smart meters from Fausty which proves the sinister intent is REAL.

Welcome to Total Control Of the Sheeple

The smart meters that the government wants installed in our homes by 2020 are supposed to "help" us save energy, but they will be capable of far more than the government is letting on.

Curiously, British Gas were unable to provide me with the make of the smart meter they're deploying but on my internet travels, I noticed that Google, Microsoft, IBM and Cisco are all in the smart meter business and Google is even boasting that it is influencing government policy. Its entry into the UK's health database business evidently isn't enough for them.

Energy Retail's specification for the smart meter lists some of its functions:
Capable of remote disabling of electricity supply and
provide for the remote enabling the electricity supply
through the use of a contactor(s).
Battery backup required to maintain essential
functionality when electricity supply is 'off'
Meter functionality to operate as normal from 'remote'
perspective when meter is disabled - e.g. supplier
can change mode of operation
or download meter
readings.

Remote Disable

Without supply due to no credit on meter - a 'Power
On' or 'Accept' button should be pushed by the
customer before supply through the meter is restored
Ability to remotely access meter even when there is
no credit on it or the supply to the customer has been
remotely disabled using the meter

Remotely configurable by Supplier or other
Authorised Party

Remote software/firmware upgrades

Because the software can be upgraded remotely, they can add functionality.
For instance, impart a breakdown of appliances in use? Perhaps see how many TVs or freezers you have, or how expensive they might be? Might Councils seek to commandeer the devices to augment their knowledge on your affluence, to extract more tax from you?

Update:

The Department of Energy and Climate Change provides documentation for download:
Impact assessment

ERA response

Update: Field Marshall Watkins has kindly pointed me towards a smart meter user whose power consumption was doubled by the meter. He promptly had it removed!

Update: Thanks to Banned for sniffing out the inevitable Gore profit angle.

Update: Big Brother Watch's Dylan Sharp was on Five Live last night where he was interviewed along with a spokesman from First Utility, one of the companies which will be rolling out these meters.

*  Energy monitoring is the brainchild of the UN, wouldn't you know.

Update: The Mail contends** that these meters will save a paltry £28 per year. So much for energy saving. It is looking increasingly likely that the name of the game is control, not energy conservation.

** Thanks to a new blogger, FMWatkins.

And here's how one company does it.
